  • A communicative approach to web communication: the pragmatic behaviour of internet search engines – 2008. L. Cantoni*, M. Faré, S. Tardini, University of Lugano, Switzerland.
In this paper websites are not approached as being just technological artefacts but from the point of view of communication. In this perspective, the Website Communication Model (WCM) provides a model that highlights five main areas of interest when dealing with websites: the areas of contents and services offered through the website, of the
tools for accessing them, of the people who publish the website, of those who access
and use it, and of the “ecological” context which the website is part of.
The need for such an approach to electronic communication is well represented by the behavior of internet search engines, which strongly rely on the ‘pragmatic’ aspects of web communication.

  • Human–computer information retrieval – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia – Human–computer information retrieval (HCIR) is the study of information retrieval techniques that bring human intelligence into the search process. The fields of human–computer interaction (HCI) and information retrieval (IR) have both developed innovative techniques to address the challenge of navigating complex information spaces, but their insights have often failed to cross disciplinary borders. Human–computer information retrieval has emerged in academic research and industry practice to bring together research in the fields of IR and HCI, in order to create new kinds of search systems that depend on continuous human control of the search process.

  • Joho the Blog » The temptation of stories – Journalism at its best is a way to uncover and communicate the truth, subject to all the usual human limitations. But journalism’s fundamental form, the story itself, brings a special temptation to manipulate the truth for economic or aesthetic reasons. The temptation is resistible to varying degrees, depending on the type of story (the temptations are greater for feature stories than for hard-core reportage of the day’s events), the nature of the journal, and the standing of journalist. Nevertheless, the temptation is there, built into the form itself.
The very idea that there’s a story is itself a temptation.
