Email triage

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

[it: una tecnica per trattare i messaggi in entrata]

I do not get 300 email messages a day, but I have to deal with lot of email that are very important in my work. So I appreciated a lot the techniques described by Marco Camisani Calzolari in his blogpost.

I adapted his technique (derived by Getting Things Done) and I have:

  • Inbox: msg to be processed now
  • do_asap: msg that requires action, to do asap
  • do_slow: msg that requires action, to do less urgently
  • reply_asap: msg that requires only reply (without further work), urgent
  • reply_slow: msg that requires only reply (without further work), less urgent

Then I have other folder to archive the messages. I’ll try this way.

Good music

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

If you want to listen good music, or simply music, you need good tools. I had some low-cost pc-speakers but I was not happy. Now I have 2.1 Logitech Z4. It’s not the top product, but it does a very good job. If you like to listen good music on your pc and don’t want to spend too much money, Z4 is the product for you.

Update: I took it at Fust.

I like: sound quality, design, not too big, no usb.

Power adapter substitution

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

My Dell Power adapter, bought 3 years ago with my docking station (port replicator D-Port) started last week with a strange noise. A very difficult-to-hear tic-tic-tictictic-tic. As far as I understand, it was the beginning of the end.

Called the service (gold warranty), they sent me a new in two days.

If you’re in Switzerland, it’s better to speak German or French. If you ask Italian or English, they forward you to the Italian or International call center, that could operate in Switzerland with difficulties (eg. no problem for substitution, BIG problems to send you a human being to repair your pc).

Bad “Bad Behavior” behavior

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

If you can’t log in to your wordpress blog, have the Bad Behavior plugin, and get an error like this:

We’re sorry, but we could not fulfill your request for (my webpage) on this server.

Your Internet Protocol address is listed on a blacklist of addresses involved in malicious or illegal activity. See the listing below for more details on specific blacklists and removal procedures.

Your technical support key is: ABC

You can use this key to fix this problem yourself.

xxhttp://www.ioerror.us/bb2-support-key?key=ABC

If you are unable to fix the problem yourself, please contact (My own damn email address!) and be sure to provide the technical support key shown above.

When I click the link, which I already don’t like, because it’s a domain name I’ve never heard of .. I get this..

Solution: download the new version of the Bad Behavior plugin and upload it via ftp. You’ll find more information on Michael’s post (thanks for the quick new version).

It happened to me today…

My ideal network pc

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

My ideal pc is client/server. The client is a notebook where all my documents are stored, so I can work offline.
The server is remote and distribute, managed by some company I trust. It contains:

  1. all my documents,
  2. my applications settings,
  3. the operating system,
  4. the application I use
  5. my operating system settings
  6. a hardware packet, with drivesr and so on.

Updates of OS, applications and hardware packet goes from manufacturers to the server and from there downloaded to my notebook. When I am online, syncing happens. When I am offline, I can work without problems on my notebook.

This will allows me to change notebook (the client) without problems. I can download the whole packet accessing it with username and paasword (some problems may happen with hardware configuration). Moreover, I have remote access (web) to files, mail, calendar. And maybe something like a remote desktop access plus syncing of mail and calendar and IM access with PDA.
All communication protocols are open source, so I can change the company that manage the server and bring to another company all my stuff.

Is it just a dream?

Some PC related issues

Ora sembra risolto. ]

Usually I don’t write about my problems with the PC. Although I studied computer science for two years, I’m not an expert. Often I feel where the problem is, but I do not have so deep knowledge of Windows as a trained consultant. I try to solve my PC problem with the help of the net. Very often I find the solution. From now, I’d like to give my little contribution.

Since one week I have problem with the Intel PROSet/Wireless Software 11.1.0.0, that manage my 2915ABG board. It does not connect to my wireless. If I use the Windows software, it works. With the Intel, no way: “Problem applying profile” error. Last week I repaired the software via Add/Remove Program utility and it was ok. Today it did not work.

I found this support page at Intel, but it did not work. Then I get another support page related to WEP. After a reboot, it works. I hope I’m over with this, although in the WEP settings I do not have “C:\ProgramFiles\Intel\Wireless\Bin\Dot1XCfg.exe” anymore, but I have “Intel 802.1x Server” and “pdfSaver for PDF-XChange 3.0″ (it was unchecked, now I checked it since I need it).

My configuration: Dell Latitude D810, with docking station (with external monitor).

Other PC problems I have (and should solve):

  • PC freezes sometime, should be hardware related, I called italian Dell support, they can’t send someone in Switzerland for motherboard substitution, I should call swiss Dell support but I’m afraid in explaining in French or German. See Dell Forum.
  • System tray icons appear and disappear when I dock/undock the PC.

Update: as usual, things are more complicated than at a first look. PROSet/Wireless still not working. Uninstalled completely and reinstalled, still nothing. Could be something related to power management? I noticed that the Dell Quickset was not loaded at booting. I loaded manually and now the PROSet works. Let’s see after 2-3 reboots…

Update 2: I get back to original WEP configuration. Now the problem is almost solved: Dell Quickset loads correctly at startup; PROSet Wireless does not connect, until I let Windows manage the wireless adapter and then back to PROSet.

Update 3 (18.01.2008): I found two threads in the Dell community forum. Second one is particularly interesting: it seems that this problem is related to the new version (11.1.0.0, while old version 10.5.1.0 works) and nobody is solving it. Some additional software may help, but it’s not sure.

Update 4 (25.1.2008): tried downgrading, nothing. Tried install kb 893357 and kb 914440, nothing.
